4 Ways to Quiet a Racing Mind Before Bed

Image result for black woman peaceful sleepFor as long as I can remember I’ve had racing thoughts before bed. As an entrepreneur, your mind is constantly thinking about your next move and getting to the next level. When the failure or success falls soley on your shoulders there is quite an overload of thoughts that go through your head. I don’t work my business full-time yet but I can only imagine the added stress that the full-timers have when your business is responsible for necessities like food and shelter.

Still, we need to learn how to quite our minds so we can get a peaceful night’s rest. Quality sleep is so important to our lives yet we are always so eager to  squeeze things in thereby pushing our bed time further and further until we don’t even know what time we are supposed to go to bed!

Below are some things that I found helpful to shut your mind off when its time for bed…

  1. Write down your thoughts before bed – You know those racing thoughts you get as soon as your head hits the pillow? They need somewhere to go. Get them out of your head and on to paper so you can deal with them tomorrow. You’d be surprised how this simple act can quiet your mind and send you off to sleep land.
  2. Breathe – Try taking deep breathes in through your nose and out through your mouth, holding each breathe for 3 seconds.  Notice the tension leaving your body on each exhale. I know, sounds overly simple and you’ve probably heard it before. But just try it! It works!
  3. Enjoy Quiet Activities – Think about activities that calm you and put you in a more open minded or relaxed state.  For some people, it’s painting, reading, knitting, or puzzle books.  I recently started adult coloring and it really helps. The activity shouldn’t be overly physical or mental.  Start making it a habit of this activity being the last thing you do before you go to bed.
  4. Recount Your Successes – Buy a journal and before you lay down, make a list of your successes from the day or the moments which you were grateful for.  This will slow down your thoughts and send out off to sleep in a positive mindset.

Wishing your a restful night’s sleep.
