5 Ways to NOT Lose Your Mind This School Year

Back-To-School-Survival-Guide-For-MomIt’s back to school time. As a mom, this is a bittersweet time for me. On one hand, the kids aren’t sitting around the house bored but on the other hand, back to school brings about so many more parental commitments. PTA, fundraisers, back-to-school nights, sport practices, school projects, etc. It’s like your schedule DOUBLES with extra stuff to do and you feel like you won’t get a moment’s peace until NEXT summer. Here’s some tips on how you can more effectively be Super Mom!

1. Pace Yourself, Mom!

We all want the best for our kids and want them to be exposed to everything good in this world. That’s why we schedule piano practices right after soccer practice which gives us 5 minutes to cook dinner and review homework before helping with that all-important science project, and then off to bed by midnight. Wait a minute! Is it just MONDAY?! On days where your child’s commitments are crazy, order a pizza or cook using the crock pot. Try finishing that science project on Sunday so you won’t have to worry about it on Monday. It’s all about scheduling and time management. And if it doesn’t get done today…it doesn’t get done. Remember, you have work tomorrow on top of everything else, so get some sleep!

2. Teach Your Kids to Enjoy Quiet Time

Build quiet time into your child’s nightly routine or on weekends. For example, for 2 hours every Friday night, have your kid read, draw, color, watch movies or work on a puzzle without yelling “Mom! Can I…!” For me, when my daughter sees me reading (something I enjoy), it prompts her to snuggle up next to me and read too. Sure its not exactly alone time, but at least its quiet and turns out to be great quality time with my kid.

3. “No” Is a Wonderful Word!

Sometimes you just have to say NO! Say NO to a trip to the mall, NO to little Tommy coming over to play “Let’s roller blade through the house”, NO to your daughter asking you to take her to the movies when dad is more than available. Your kids will run you ragged if you let them. Learn to say NO sometimes!

4. Brunch Time Is Girl Time

Schedule a monthly brunch with your closest friends to catch up and chat about ANYTHING else but the kids! A little adult conversation does the mind good! Get out of the house, meet at a nice restaurant and dish on the new happenings with your friends over bottomless mimosas!

5. “Mom Time” Rule

Institute “mom time” in your household. I know you might think this is selfish because your family needs you. NEWS FLASH! THEY DON’T NEED YOU 24/7! Hopefully you’re raising kids that are capable of entertaining themsleves for an hour so you can avoid meltdown. As soon as you walk through the door you should have at least 30 minutes of time to settle down and allow yourself to transition from “work mode” to “mommy mode”. Here’s a tip: kids rarely bother you when you say you’re in the bathroom! If you have to make that your safe haven, go for it!
